Housewrap – What Is It and Why Use It?

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Housewrap is that blue, green, or pink “paper-like” material that is installed around the house after framing and before the siding or brick exterior is installed. Housewrap serves as a dual-purpose weather barrier (1) it minimizes the flow of air into and out of a home, and (2) stops water from the outside entering the home causing water damage, rot, and mold. This modern material permits moist humid air to escape from the inside of the home, while preventing outside liquid water (rain) from entering the home. Air can leak into and out of houses in between gaps that are usually found where exterior walls sit on foundations and where sheets of plywood or wall sheathing butt together. Modern housewraps are actually air retarders and improve the energy efficiency of your home and decrease utility costs. Housewrap products, when installed properly, create a very effective waterproof skin around the house which allows water vapor to escape from the house while preventing water and air from the outside to enter the house. This is just one of many ways that MHG delivers enduring quality and value to your home through innovation, while increasing the energy efficiency of your home.
